It's Christmas Time
Tara and I were having a writing day, and we were talking about how neither of us had never written a Christmas song before! So, we thought we would take a crack at it! The evolution of songs is weird and fascinating sometimes, man. I started with a few totally unrelated themes, and then I sat back and thought, “What triggers the positive Christmas season feelings in me each year?” What came to mind was the music. Now, some Christmas songs are completely unbearable and I want to gouge my eyes out every time I hear them. And, now that I think about it, I hope the song doesn’t hit that hated Christmas song nerve for some people…. even though it probably will! HA!! Anyway, I started thinking about some of my favorite Christmas music artists, and even though it’s not an exhaustive list, here’s some of my favorites in no particular order:
Amy Grant, Vince Gill, Whitney Houston, Ray Charles, Kenny G, Trans Siberian Orchestra, Mannheim Steamroller, Fred Hammond, Kirk Franklin, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, Brad Paisley, The Chipmunks, Harry Connick Jr., Lonestar, Michael Buble, Elvis, John Denver, Garth Brooks, Celine Dion and Andre Bocelli, Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole, Phil Keaggy, and my wife, Tara!
As I pondered about these artist and others, this phrase started rolling around in my guts: “The sights, the sounds, the lights on the trees, these are a few of my favorite things.” Every December, Tara and I drive around the Denver-metro area looking at lights on our date nights. We’ll bring the boys out a few times too, and we have a blast!
Christmas is celebrated in our home from the day after Thanksgiving, when we buy and decorate our tree, until right around the 1st of the year! :)
So, here’s the lyrics to the song! We hope you enjoy them and maybe it will trigger a little Christmas-ish nostalgia in your heart like it does in ours!
It’s Christmas Time
Verse 1:
When Amy and Vince talk about their grown up Christmas list
And Whitney blows your mind in “O Holy Night”
When Ray starts singin’ and Kenny’s horn starts ringin’
I, I realize…. It’s Christmas time!
Verse 2:
When Harry and Michael croon those classic Christmas tunes
And Chipmunks harmonize about a missin’ tooth
When Brad starts strumming, all my blues fly away
And I, I realize… It’s Christmas time!
Chorus:
The sights, the sounds, the lights on the trees
These are a few of my favorite things!
Bridge:
Kenny and Dolly, and don’t forget John Denver
Elvis and Garth singin’ songs we all remember
Celine and Andre doing their prayer duet
And Bing and Nat help us never to forget… that it’s Christmas time!
Verse 3:
When our kids change the words to good ol’ Jingle Bells
Batman smells and and Robin’s layin’ eggs
When Tara sings “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” on the stage
I realize… It’s Christmas time!
